The transition from childhood to pre-adolescence, a small but significant leap

If you have children between the ages of 9 and 12, you may have heard of the concept of “No Return”.
In recent years, this expression has become popular to describe the transitional stage in which children leave childhood behind and become pre-teens. The concept of “no return” refers to the fact that, once they enter this phase, it is no longer possible to return to the innocence and simplicity of childhood. It is a turning point in which they begin to experience significant physical, emotional, and social changes, and move ever closer to adolescence. Today we will explore what these changes are, offer some helpful tips to help families approach this time positively, and discuss how summer vacation can be a great opportunity to focus attention on this stage and enjoy quality family time.

What does the “No Return” stage consist of?

Physical, social, and emotional changes: a host of new experiences define the transition from childhood to pre-adolescence. Although they don’t happen overnight, facing this transitional phase can be an emotional challenge for both children and their families.

  • Physical changes : They begin to experience accelerated growth. Their bodies lengthen and take on more adult shapes, and secondary sexual characteristics may appear. This can be disconcerting for them, as they face a new body image and the acceptance of their physical changes.
  • Social changes : They seek their place in the peer group and modify their way of relating to adults.
  • Emotional changes : They often experience mood swings, easily going from joy to sadness or from euphoria to irritability. It is important for adults to understand that these emotional fluctuations are normal and part of the “No Return” stage.

Tips for families with children at the “No Return” stage

Every family is unique and has its own resources for coping with life’s changes. Even so, there are certain tips that can help integrate and manage all the new aspects of this phase:

  1. Open communication : Fostering trust and a space where they can express their concerns and emotions. Maintaining a sincere dialogue is key to facing any challenges that may arise.
  2. Setting clear boundaries : It’s important to establish clear rules and limits for pre-teens. This provides them with security and helps them understand their roles and responsibilities as they gain independence.
  3. Promoting autonomy : Encouraging children to make age-appropriate decisions and take on responsibilities is essential at this stage. Providing them with opportunities to develop autonomy and decision-making skills will help them grow and prepare for adolescence.
  4. Maintain emotional support : They may experience insecurities and self-doubt. As a family, it is essential to provide them with an environment of empathetic listening and help them build positive self-esteem.
